The latest data from the Association for Regenerative Medicine (ARM) showed that there are more than 704 regenerative medicine companies worldwide, including cell therapy and gene therapy, and 728 clinical trials under way at the end of the second quarter in 2016.
These types of therapies – cell therapies, gene therapies, tissue engineering and regenerative medicines, usually referred to collectively as ATMPs (Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Products) – are not a new phenomenon. Blood transfusions, bone marrow transplants and skin grafts, which are well known and well used in modern medicine are all predecessors.
